The phenomenal growth of PHP applications has also led to a mushrooming of increased quantum of malicious activity. It thus becomes imperative that you write secure PHP code to protect your website. Here are some tips for the same.
The three most vulnerable aspects of PHP that can become easily accessible to anyone are XSS (Cross Site Scripting), Global Variables and SQL code.
XSS
The growth of XSS has followed a steady growth in the use of AJAX. Cross Site Scripting, for instance is used when you create a Comment section in your website. If the commentator has to log in to comment, his login information gets stored in a cookie. As the JavaScript code is generally run whenever a person writes the comment, there is a pretty good chance of the contents of the cookie being accessible to a remote server handled by a malicious user.
To counter this, make a habit of including filters whenever you request for random information. Use the die() function to exit from the task whenever the filters detect an unqualified input. The details that are typed are first filtered and then sent to the website’s database. Again the information is filtered before it is output.
//A good filter program that validates data, prevents XSS attack and
//preempts white lists would look like this
echo 'this is what you input';
echo htmlentities($_POST['myInfo']);
?>
Global Variables
The PHP feature “Register Globals” leads to a palpable lacuna in programming safety. Once this feature is activated in PHP configuration file, even a single variable that is to uninitialized, can lead to a great security flaw. For instance
if (is_admin()) ( $authorized=true; )
if ($authorized) ( include "/very/sensitive/data.php"; )
?>
When you run the file, because of non-initialization the user may not be verified, resulting in anyone accessing the administrative control! To counter this, you should disable Register Globals, initialize variables use localized variables and as far as possible within the programs.
SQL Code
The SQL code is vulnerable to malicious users just like XSS feature. To write a secure SQL code you need to remember a couple of things. First avoid using dynamic code and second, if dynamic code in inevitable then do not have direct input into the tables.
For instance, a code like this will take care of the sql security
if ($_POST['submit'] == 'Save') {
if (isset($_POST['acct_num']) &&
isValidAccountNumber($_POST['acc_num'])) {
$link = mysql_connect ('hostname', 'user', 'password')
or die('Could not connect to DB');
...
}
}
Preferably have a database to select user name so that any other entry (like “bingo” or ‘blah blah’) can be swiftly detected. A simple way of preventing SQL security lapse is by typecasting the data so that input is effectively monitored. You can also make use of the versatile “mysql_real_escape_string”. This function can successfully filter symbols and contain SQL security flaws.
These three are the most significant to create a secure PHP code. Apart from this, you should also ensure that
- The system is well protected
- Files and database are protected.
- Posts are verified
- Input is always validated
Input validation is the key to secure programming. Make a habit of allowing only the right input into your system. A systematic approach to PHP, keeping in mind the pitfalls, can guard the program against most flaws and malicious attacks.

Open Source Maintenance Software in Php and Mysql Development
While launching a website, too many things have to be taken into consideration. One of them is of course php mysql development. But that is not all. As we prepare to launch the website the heavy cost of proprietary software will always create a doubt in our mind.
Open Source Code Software’s
But if we opt for php and mysql programming language then we can always avail the option of
Open Source Code software’s. This programming language ensures object oriented application structure. This application is of great importance because it makes the process of coding simple and prevents the system from developing technical problems with the growth of the database. Moreover, with php mysql web development one can easily separate the codes from HTML, storing them eventually in the specific libraries.
Maintaining Software
In PHP programming because of open source coding the large community of programmers always assist each other with codes. But this data has to be preserved in a proper manner for future reference. Therefore, the maintenance management software’s helps plan and execute various methods involved in the operation of a company. This process involves the supplying of the source code to the buyers along with the maintenance management software.

What is PHP Hosting?
PHP hosting is a server-side scripting environment that is used to create dynamic web pages. PHP is an abbreviation for Hypertext Preprocessor, an open source language widely used by programmers and web developers. The fact that it is open source gives it a lot of advantages over proprietary programming languages. Due to this reason, PHP has been the most famous server-side scripting language and almost all hosting providers offer PHP hosting services nowadays.
PHP is an object oriented language. The way PHP hosting works is that the web server would filter a request document using PHP and generates the output from PHP to the web browser. These documents are usually in HTML format with PHP tags inside. The tags can be run on both Windows and UNIX servers. In terms of output text, PHP is capable to generate any format such as XHTML and XML.
With PHP, web developers would be able to perform any CGI tasks, such as generate dynamic contents or send and receive cookies. PHP is also capable of outputting PDF files, Flash videos and images on the fly at high speed. This is possible due to its ability to save the required files in its file system and forming a server-side cache.
There are a host of advantages of using a PHP hosting. For beginners, it is a relatively easy language to learn and work on. While for seasoned developers, there are a lot of advanced applications and features that comes with PHP hosting. In terms of cost, it is one of the cheapest hosting solutions as it is an open-source technology. There are also programming tools that come free with PHP hosting, contributed by programmers worldwide.

Seven Essential Ways to Cut Your Tech Costs
Whether your business has just two people or two hundred, these tips can help you cut costs, save money, and let you focus on what's really important: the bottom line.
1. Use Open Source and Free Software
Let's face it--when you're trying to keep your business afloat, plunking down lots of cash for off-the-shelf software hurts like getting a cavity filled without Novocain. Thankfully, freeware and low-cost software can be a pleasant surprise in terms of robustness and functionality.
While not as polished as Microsoft's Office suite (but not as much of a memory or resource hog), OpenOffice.org is a free, open-source alternative with a full suite of applications for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases that are compatible with Microsoft Office. Though OpenOffice apps let you do nearly anything you can do in Microsoft Office, interoperability between the two suites isn't seamless. For example, if you use Word's Track Changes feature, it can be difficult to later delete or modify your edits when you use the document in OpenOffice, and vice versa.
Google Docs is another viable and free alternative to Microsoft Office--and has no software to download or install. Though it's not nearly as full-featured as either Office or OpenOffice, its basic functionality and streamlined interface may be all you'll ever need.
Creating PDF files may be crucial for business, but spending $450 on Adobe's Acrobat Professional is not. CutePDF is a free program that simply exports files to PDF. Just download and install it; from the target file, choose File, Print, and select CutePDF from the printer menu. (If you're using OpenOffice or Google Docs, you won't even need to install CutePDF--both let you export to PDF directly.)
2. Telecommute
Gartner Research predicts that by 2009, more than 25 percent of the U.S. workforce will telecommute. Telecommuting lets you save on gas costs, but you can also remain just as productive when working at home, thanks to tools that make it easy to connect and collaborate (almost as if you were in the office).
Wikis make it simple to post text or documents so that a group can make comments or changes. Some wikis are free and public, while others are more enterprise-focused, with more robust security features. PBwiki offers three flavors: Business, Academic, and Personal. The site includes WSIWYG editing tools, storage space, SSL encryption, automatic notifications via e-mail or RSS, and controls on access. It also offers reasonable business pricing--it's free for one to three users, $8 per month per user for 4 to 99 users, and $6 a month per user for 1000 to 4999 users.
The aforementioned Google Docs is also telecommuter-friendly, offering an affordable and easy way to share files (and to keep tabs on changes). Once you've created a file in Google Docs, simply invite others to collaborate online. When you're done, you can export the file to Word, Excel, PDF, or PowerPoint.
If you cringe at the thought of setting up a VPN (virtual private network), services like LogMeIn Hamachi may just be your ticket to headache-free remote VPN access. LogMeIn Hamachi promises easy setup using peer-to-peer technology to let off-site employees access files. The service works within your firewall and costs just $5 a month for one user license.
If your company doesn't have, and doesn't need, a centralized server, Central Desktop is a way to share documents online with virtually no setup. The site lets large or small groups easily share files, keep track of who's checked out which files (or modified them), and set up separate desktops for multiple groups of users.

Facts About Php Programming Language
PHP which is officially known as ‘Hypertext Preprocessor’ was released in the year 1995. Initially written as a set of Common Gateway Interface (CGI) in ‘C’, PHP was originally designed to replace a set of Perl scripts to maintain his Personal Home Pages (also known as PHP). PHP was originally designed to create dynamic and more interactive web pages. It is the most widely-used, open-source and general-purpose scripting language. It is a server-side scripting language often written in a HTML context. PHP code in a script can query databases, create images, read and write files and talk to remote servers. The output from PHP code is combined with HTML in script and the result is sent to the user.
It is possible to use PHP in almost every operating system. PHP can be used in all major operating systems including Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and RISC OS. PHP uses procedural programming or object oriented programming and also a mixture of them. PHP is used mainly in server-side scripting, command line interface and writing desktop applications. PHP also supports ODBC, the Open Database Connection standard which allows you to connect to other databases supporting this world standard. Server-side scripting is the most traditional one for PHP development. In order to use PHP for server-side scripting you need a PHP parser, a web server and a web browser. The PHP codes entered with the parser on a web server will be translated into a PHP page that can be viewed on your web browser.
PHP is a popular language because it can be embedded directly into HTML coding. It has more benefits such as the following - it can be used on all major operating systems and can be supported by most of the web servers. The latest version of PHP development is a very stable and grown-up language used for web programming like Java and Microsoft C#. Both the PHP engine and the PHP code can be used on any platform, which makes PHP extremely flexible.
PHP has many features designed specifically for use in websites. PHP can be used to make your website secure by implementing mandatory sign in feature – asking the user or the administrator to enter a valid username and password. Adding such a feature is easy as PHP can display a HTML form and process the information that the user types in. This ‘sign in’ feature can be an excellent way of getting to know about your customer’s profile.

Open Source Help Desk Software
Service Management is the new hype in both local and global companies. It is all about delivering services that support business needs instead of just showing them how to use file sharing and outlook. Service Management requires Help Desk software among other things to be able to register support requests, incidents, change, and problems and so on. These software solutions are most often very expensive and quite cumbersome to configure. For global organizations, an expensive service management solution could be the way to go, because they will be dependent on vendor support, but for smaller ITIL based organizations, open source help desk software is adequate and much cheaper. One of the best solutions is a PHP helpdesk system that can be modified to fit almost any organization and since it is open source, it is the PHP programming language that sets the limit for how much you can customize the software. If you already have a PHP based intranet and have experience with either ITIL 3 or ITIL version 2, this software is very easy to implement and can be managed by a single employee.
If you are in need to a service management product that are not open source but still cheap, I suggest you look into Heat Help Desk. Because of its price, easy of use and customization options, this tool is a very good competitor to the open source selections.

Mozilla Releases Open Source Geode
Just some few months back, the Firefox folks released a record breaking web browser, Firefox 3, that is not only user friendly but also offers more functionalities than the other web browsers with a Wi-Fi based positioning capability to the browser, and promises more positioning options in upcoming releases, including GPS. The talk of the moment is its Geode developed by Mozilla Labs, the open-source project's development arm.
Geode is an experimental plug-in based on the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) emerging geolocation specification for the Web. It uses Skyhook Wireless technology, which determines location based on Wi-Fi signals. Skyhook has been in the news lately with the debut of its hybrid GPS/Wi-Fi positioning technology.
As stated by the company, "Geode provides an early implementation of the W3C Geolocation specification so that developers can begin experimenting with enabling location-aware experiences using Firefox 3 today, and users can tell us what they think of the experience it provides. It includes a single experimental geolocation service provider so that any computer with Wi-Fi can get accurate positioning data."

Why Open Source is good for Academic Institutions?
Open Source with its promise of distributing source code and allowing anyone to modify it or derive other software from it, makes it an excellent choice for learning computer science, technology and engineering of software.
Academic institutions are given the responsibility of building strong expertise in all aspects of software engineering, be it operating systems, device drivers, database systems, application architecting and engineering, front end graphical user interface (GUI), complex algorithms, working internals of business applications or tools. Learning proprietary tools or technologies that doesn’t provide the software code and the freedom to modify or derive other software from it, limits the learning potential of academicians and students to fully understand the software, thereby seriously curtailing the creativity of the great minds and the learning process.

Open Source Java ByteCode Library
ASM is an all purpose Java bytecode manipulation and analysis framework. It can be used to modify existing classes or dynamically generate classes, directly in binary form. Provided common transformations and analysis algorithms allow to easily assemble custom complex transformations and code analysis tools.
The ASM bytecode manipulation framework has been designed and implemented to be small and as fast as possible. ASM’s runtime .jar is only 25KB, compared to 350KB for BCEL. The load time overhead caused by class transformation with ASM is about 60 percent with ASM, compared to 700 percent or more with BCEL. These factors have been recognized by the Java community and several well known projects have switched to ASM, such as CGLIB and AspectWerkz. The list of projects that are using form the beginning ASM also includes Speedo, Groovy, dynaop,BeanShell, and a number of others.
